After the defeat, Japan spun into a depression; its world standing and the status of the Japanese plummeted. However, through the rebuilding of the nation, a renewal of our culture, consideration of the future of our people, and with hope and the will to establish world peace, we couldn’t — not even for a moment — forget the importance of education. So, as usual, the new term for each school commenced in September.

战败国的日本政府，面临开国以来的最大忧患，国民也同样陷于无底深渊中。可是，想到民族的将来存亡，要重建起文化国家，期待世界和平如愿以偿的话，唯一能依靠的是，从学校教育方面去着手才是最佳途径。九月新学期开始了，每个学校也都跟以往一般的开始教学了。

비록 패전으로 일본은 개벽 이래의 우수에 잠기며 국민들이 한결같이 혼미한 상태에 빠지고 말았지만, 민족의 장래를 염원하며 문화국가재건을 통해 세계평화를 확립해야 하는 염원 위에서 학교　교육만은 잠시도 방치할 수 없습니다. 이리하여 9월의 신학기부터는 각 학교 모두, 어쨌든 종전대로의 수업을 개시하게 되었습니다.

The students came back from the battle lines and factories to the school building they had missed for so many years and once again attended lessons in their classrooms. But supplies and materials were scant, and there was no prospect of replenishing them. The students ate one or two sweet potatoes just to fill their stomachs and came to school wearing patched and faded school uniforms. They rarely had notebooks or canvas school shoes, and the rough paper for exams or originals for printing were in short supply.

学生从战场，从工厂开始回到盼望以久，怀念的学校，心情也渐渐安定下来开始在教室里接受课程。可是，生活物资供给还是很缺乏，因为生产效率还低。吃饭就是一两根红薯来果腹充饥而已，穿着缝补又褪色的制服去学校，笔记本及帆布鞋也偶尔才能得到配给。所以，想拿到粗糙的纸，较好的印刷纸张也非易事。

전선에서 공장에서 오랜 세월 그리워하던 교사에 정착해 교실에서 수업을 받을 수 있었습니다. 그러나 물자는 극도로 부족한 상태인 채 생산 전망도 서지 않습니다. 한두 개의 고구마로 배를 채울 만한 가엾은 식사를 하고 색 바랜 누더기 제복을 입고 다니는데, 노트도 운동화도 드물게 배급도 없고 시험에 사용할 수 있는 갱지도 인쇄용 원지도 쉽게 구할 수 없는 형편이었습니다.

Nevertheless, although nearly all school buildings in places like Nagoya or Toyohashi were incinerated in the air raids, here in Anjo — a small town not targeted by the military enemies — the school building was intact, except for the damage done by the earthquakes of the previous year.

名古屋及丰桥地区，学校的校舍几乎也被空袭而烧毁了。但是，安城是个小城市，因为在军事上，并非主要地区，所以，校舍只是遭受前年大地震时的损坏而已。

나고야와 도요하시 등에서는 학교 건물이 대부분 공습으로 소실되어 있었지만 그래도 이곳 안죠는 소도시이기도 하고 군사상의 목표도 되지 않았기 때문에 학교건물은 전년의 지진으로 인한 손해만으로 무사했습니다.

The library, of which we had taken great care and valued as the educational core of the school, was examined by the occupation army once every two months. All the books which had the mark “official” were thought to be related to the old national policies and were ordered to be incinerated. Almost all the books which we treasured as precious historical records were lost.

不过，事到如今，被视为学校教育的中心设施，学校图书馆里，每两个月一次要接受进驻美军的检阅。凡是有「公」字，而且跟旧有国策有关的书籍等，都命令必须要烧毁。以前收藏的贵重书籍，也就这样大量的失去了。

그러나 지금까지 학교 교육의 중심 시설로서 소중히 하고 있던 학교 도서관은 2개월에 한 번씩, 진주해 온 점령군의 검열을 받아 이전의 국책과 관계가 있다고 보여지는 「공公」자가 들어있는 서적은 전부 소각 명령이 내려졌습니다. 이렇게 이전부터 귀하게 다뤄온 책의 대부분을 잃게 되었습니다.

Additionally, the physical fitness equipment, as well as wall maps and other items, were burned. Also, according to the national directive, before and after the occupying army’s visit, in order to be able to respond to the interrogations, we destroyed important documents (as mentioned earlier in the preface), so there was no way to trace in detail the school history. Gradually, in order to change fundamentally the national system of education according to GHQ policies, one demand after another was issued and the monitoring of their implementation became increasingly strict.

其他，跟体育有关系的东西，挂图及道具等也都被烧毁丢弃。还有，在进驻军来的前后，为了要配合调查，国家的指示，重要书籍，文件等都得烧毁，所以即使想要详细追述校史的话，现在也没什么根据了。如同「前言」所叙。在GHQ的方针下，为了根本改变我国的教育，一次接一次的发布指令，而且，什么事情也监视的非常严格。

그 외에 체육과 관련된 것까지도 괘도나 기구 등을 태워 버린 것입니다. 또 그 미군 진주 전후에 취조에 대응하기 위해서인지 국가의 지령에 따라 중요 서류등을 불태워 버렸음으로 상세하게 학교의 역사를 더듬을 길이 없어진 것은 ‘서언’에서 말한 대로입니다. 이렇게 점차, GHQ의 방침은 우리 나라의 교육을 근본적으로 전환시켜 버리기 위해서, 차례차례로 지령이 내려지고 그 감시도 엄중해져 왔습니다.
